Village Story
Brief History of “Lake Nagog”
(from “Lake Nagog Revisited” by Kathy Fleming, July 30, 1981)
“Magog” is the Native American word for water. Harold Phalen’s “History of Acton” suggests that this is the possible origin of the name for Lake Nagog, or as it is now called, “Nagog Pond”.
Native Americans originally inhabited Lake Nagog and the surrounding land in 1651, when the town of Concord granted the area to the Native Americans in response to their desire for a town of their own. From the time Acton was incorporated in the year 1735 until about 1800, there were over 30 homes built around Lake Nagog, including a grist mill and the Lake Nagog Inn, which attracted vacationers seeking relaxation on the shores of Lake Nagog. In 1884, Lake Nagog became Concord’s public water supply. Over the years, Concord acquired much of the land around the lake to protect the water supply.
The famed Lake Nagog Inn was torn down to make way for the Village of Nagog Woods.
The Development of a Condominium Village
(from William E. Dorman’s Real Estate column Sunday Herald Advertiser, July 16, 1974 and NWCC historical marketing brochures)
The Village of Nagog Woods is an established condominium community located across from beautiful Nagog Pond (formerly “Lake Nagog”) in Acton, Massachusetts. It’s design was most significantly influenced by Robert G. Brownell, co-founder of Deck House, Inc., and built in phases by Nagog Community Developers, Inc. and Northeast Resources Corp., a division of Northeast Federal Savings and Loan Association. It is here that 277 brick and cedar townhouses are clustered on 58 acres amidst tall trees and surrounded by naturally landscaped grounds. With recreational facilities and amenities often found in a community twice its size, this Village within the Town of Acton offers a blend of country living and city conveniences, and has its own zip code, adjacent shopping center and conservation land, restaurants and more!
Residences
Village homes offer a great diversity in size and timeless contemporary design, while sharing an emphasis on natural materials and light. The original nine two- and three-bedroom model floor plans provide just a glimpse into the many design variations at Nagog Woods. The model floor plans range from 1,081 square feet to over 2,100 square feet of finished space on two, three or four levels.
Some designs feature skylights and lofts, while others have entire walls of sliding glass doors leading to brick patios and wood decks. All offer central air conditioning and well-designed kitchens with all the modern appliances contained in a traditional single family home. Most units contain at least one fireplace.
Recreation
The Nagog Woods Clubhouse is the center of the community’s recreational and social activities. Among its amenities are a fitness center that overlooks the grounds through a wall of sliding glass doors, men’s and women’s locker rooms, pool tables, a fully-equipped kitchen and a furnished Club room that is available for resident rental. Throughout the years, the Clubhouse has been the scene of such diverse activities as gourmet dinners, dance and yoga classes, a bridge club, adult education courses, baby and wedding showers, significant birthday parties, and events sponsored by Nashoba Valley Neighbors Club (originally the Acton Boxborough “welcome wagon”.)
Facilities
In addition to a fully-equipped Clubhouse, the facilities at Nagog Woods include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a children’s wading pool, playing fields, a tot lot, hiking and cross-country ski trails through the woods, two outdoor tennis courts and four year-round courts at the Marcus Lewis Tennis Center West.
Maintenance
All exterior maintenance, including snow removal, landscaping, and upkeep of the buildings, is performed by The Dartmouth Group’s professional and experienced on-site management and maintenance staff -- leaving residents free to relax and enjoy their leisure time.
Transportation
The Village of Nagog Woods is conveniently located near several major highways: Route 128 can be a less than 20 minutes drive, and Route 495 is only five to ten minutes away. One may reach Boston, Worcester or Lowell in less than 40 minutes. The South Acton commuter rail station of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter line from Wachusett to North Station is five miles from the Village. The train trip from South Acton to Boston takes about 50 minutes. Residents are also served by the Cross-Acton Transit and Road Runner transportation services of Acton. School buses to all of the award-winning Acton-Boxborough regional school system make several stops within the Village.
Additional Conveniences
The Village of Nagog Woods is distinguished by its own zip code: 01718. Nagog Mall Shopping Center is in close proximity with Huntington Learning Center, Anytime Fitness, Crossroads Café, The Red Raven Gastropub, Bickford’s Family Restaurant, Shivas Super Bazaar and Market, the new Dollar Store, a hair salon and a travel agency. Route 2A is at the Village entrance and host to many other shopping centers and restaurants.
